In an interview with Entertainment Weekly several years ago, Angelina Jolie said:

“I don’t believe in regrets. It’s a dangerous habit to get into — it makes you pause in your life if you start thinking back and questioning yourself.”

This really resonated with me at the time and I have found it to be true in my own life often. The minute I stop to look back, my past catches up with me and I lose the focus to where I am going. It’s like driving the car while looking into the review mirror; you may run into a lot of trees that way.

This is not to say that there is not a time for reflection and solitude. There  is. I just don’t believe in pondering over events of the past because I’ve never experienced this to add any value to the present or the future.

Consider this: “All memories are lies”. If you ask two people about a specific event you will get two completely different answers. The same is true for your past. Everything you think happened is an interpretation that you are making up about something that may or may not be true.

So, what’s there to do with our past? Not much. I believe that our lives are perfectly alright the way they are.
