In last week’s post, I shared a few first steps to help you discover your passion.
Today, I’d like to offer two additional exercises that can help you light your inner fire—so you can recognize your unique mission and begin weaving it into your life and career.
What You Might Be Overlooking
Before we begin, let me point out a common pitfall when searching for passion and purpose:
Your brilliance often feels effortless.
Because it comes naturally to you, you may overlook it or assume it isn’t important. You might even think it’s something you shouldn’t be doing.
One of my clients loved reading romantic love stories. For years, she convinced herself that indulging in steamy novels was nothing more than a guilty pleasure.
Luckily, she eventually allowed herself to look more closely. She realized that besides loving these stories, she also loved writing them.
Today, she is a published author.
So pay close attention to what lights you up. Sometimes what seems ordinary or even trivial may actually be the doorway to your talent.
Take a Moment to Reflect
What lights you up?
Not what you think you should be doing.
Not what might impress others.
But what you genuinely enjoy.
What you return to again and again.
It might be something small.
It may not make sense yet.
Just notice.
Exercise One: Brain Dump
Take a notebook and give yourself some uninterrupted time.
Get comfortable, relax, and let your thoughts wander.
Ask yourself:
When did you have the most fun in your life?
How did you spend your time?
Where were you living?
Who were you with?
Write everything down.
Now turn to your current life.
What do you enjoy most about it?
What would you love to do more often?
Do you like where you live? If not, what would your ideal environment look like?
What lifestyle suits you?
Who are the people you most enjoy spending time with?
Record whatever comes up.
Let your imagination run free. If your life were a blank canvas full of colors, how would you paint it?
And most importantly: don’t judge your answers.
If your inner skeptic starts chiming in, simply notice it and move on. Anything that inspires, energizes, or delights you deserves a place on the page—even if it seems impractical at first.
Exercise Two: The Pieces of Your Puzzle
Take 20 index cards (or cut up 20 pieces of paper).
On each card, write down one activity you enjoy doing.
If you completed the first exercise, review your notes and choose the twenty activities that inspire you most—the ones that make you forget about time.
When you’re done, spread the cards out in front of you.
Now look closely.
Do some of them naturally belong together?
Do you see patterns emerging?
Are there clusters of activities that could form a larger project or direction?
Example
When I did this exercise many years ago, my cards included things like:
Talking to people
Traveling
Being social
Reading
Exploring new cultures
Learning
Living by the ocean
Beauty
Meeting new people
Adventure
Creativity
Design
How to Read Your Puzzle
When I looked at my puzzle, certain pieces clearly stood out.
My love for people.
My curiosity and desire to learn.
My passion for travel and adventure.
Following those clues eventually led me to become a life coach.
Today, I work with people all over the world, learning about their lives and helping them create meaningful change. Along the way, I get to travel, spend time in beautiful places, and live a life that feels aligned with who I truly am.
That’s the magic of this exercise.
When you begin paying attention to what genuinely excites you, the path forward slowly starts to reveal itself.
When You Start Paying Attention
When you begin noticing what lights you up, something shifts.
What once felt random begins to make sense.
What felt scattered begins to come together.
Your direction doesn’t appear all at once.
It reveals itself—step by step.
And with every small insight, you start to see yourself more clearly.
A Small Question for You
Are there activities that make you lose track of time and space?
What do you truly love doing?
Feel free to share your thoughts by sending me an email. I read every message and always enjoy hearing your stories.
As always, thank you for reading.
