Do you know what your life is worth to you?
Can you measure it in money, happiness, or quality of time?
A few weeks ago, I spoke to a woman who’d been unemployed for more than three years. She told me that most of that time she spent worrying, applying for jobs, worrying some more, applying for more jobs, and feeling increasingly useless.
“I could have learned a new profession during those years,” she said. “I could have written a book, learned a new language, enjoyed life. Instead, I drove myself crazy obsessing about my future.”
“Part of the problem,” she continued, “is that I don’t know what I want to do. Going back to a full-time position doesn’t excite me. I’d love to start a business of my own; I am just so confused about what I am good at or what I’d like to do. Too many years working at tiresome jobs have taken the joy right out of me.”
I told her that if she was interested, I could help her find her passion and get clear on what she wanted in life. I could support her in starting a project she’d love; a passion business that she could grow organically while learning the steps of being an entrepreneur, and that eventually would replace the income she’d earned in prior jobs.
“How much do you charge?” she asked me and I gave her my fees for different coaching options. “Nah,” she told me, “that’s more than I can afford right now.”
I asked her, “If we’d spoken three years ago, would finding your passion and getting clear on what you want have been worth it to you then?”
“No,” she replied, “probably not.”
And that’s how most people value their lives.
Twenty plus years ago, I made a huge commitment to myself. I signed up for a four-year training that started me on my path as an entrepreneur, leadership trainer, and business coach. It was a top notch program that was expensive and scared the living daylights out of me.
It also changed my life.
Completely.
Due to the program, I went from being a stay-at-home mom to building a global business, traveling the world, and working with people everywhere. I began living my dream while helping people to fulfill theirs.
Do I regret spending all that money on my education? Not one cent.
Yes, my life would have played out regardless of me investing in myself or not; finding my passion or not; living my dream or not.
All I know is that I am damn glad I did.
Now I’d like to hear from you: did you ever commit to yourself and your future? Were you glad you did? Did it change your life? Please share with us in the comments below.
As always, thank you for reading.
With love,
Karin
